I’m a Mets Fan. When Did This Happen?

Oh yeah, it happened when me and three friends went to Shea stadium with $60 between us and ended up sitting in the third row by the Mets dugout. You just try replicating that at Yankee Stadium…

And now our friend Carly’s company has two season ticket boxes—one right behind the dugout and one 20 rows up by first base.

Mets it is.

Top 100 Undiscovered Web Sites

Busy week for half the Monsons (the female half is kinda sick, so she’s taking it easy). The Top 100 Web Sites story that I’ve been working on for the past three months finally went online on Monday. I appeared on CW local news on Monday morning, and CNN earlier today to talk about the Web sites in the story. CBS and maybe Fox are later this week. Of course, all the appearances are early in the morning, and of course the exciting Olympic events are at midnight, and of course Corinne’s sick, so we’re pretty wiped. We should be sleeping right now, but the women’s team gymnastics are coming up…

I’ll leave you with a simple arithmetic problem (answer below): Olympics + HD + TiVo = Y

Suits, Sunglasses, and Bats

A still from the intro of an as-yet-unannounced possibly-related-to-tech video show that I may or may not be doing for a current, future, or past employer. Yeah, we’re keeping it super-stealth.

You might recognize the guy on the left as Brian Heater, from such notable blogs as EffYouCat, AppScout, The Daily Cross Hatch, and StuffWhitePeopleLiked. We got some looks on the subway dressed like that carrying a bat and a briefcase.

Blocked in China

Yup. Both effyoucat.com and kylemonson.com are blocked by The Great Firewall of China. I wonder if China just blocks all Blogger blogs by default? That’d be odd, since China and Google seem to be so cozy right now.

Anyway, next subject: did anyone else have mixed feelings during the Olympic opening ceremonies last night? The spectacle was amazing, to be sure. But all that my friends were talking about was how China can justify such an extravagance when so much of the country lives in poverty. Do they think the world will be blinded by pretty (and expensive) fireworks?

Also, the Chinese decision to revoke the visa of a US athlete/Darfur advocate a couple days before left a bad taste in my mouth. And the fact that China went back on its pledge to offer open Web access to visiting journalists. And then there was the parade of nations, which brought into sharp focus exactly how many nations are in dire straits right now, whether because of China-supported genocide (Sudan), impending war (Russia), complete lack of female athletes (Saudi Arabia and others), or alcoholism (Austria and Italy). (that last one was an ill-timed joke).

And then there was Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, North Korea…It’s a strange time for the world to gather to play sports in Beijing. Hopefully it does the world some good.

I’m going to watch some Olympics (go Team USA!) and then go to a Mets game. Brooklyn’s never had to crush insurrectionist monks or dissident journalists.

Olympic Video, Photos, Interviews Are Up!

Totally excited about this: All the stuff we did for the Olympics is now live, including the full music video and a couple band interviews. You can check it out here, or click the band’s Olympic banner thingy at the top of this page. I’m in the second interview a bit, talking about—what else?—technology. Geek.

The soundtrack is on the iTunes homepage today, so if you dig the tune, go leave a review!

The Best from Across the Pond

Maxïmo Park – Our Velocity
Found at skreemr.com

I’ve been shilling for Maximo Park for a while now, but they’re one of my absolute favorites, and this is my favorite song by them. It doesn’t sound like a Cure song, but they do the same type of songwriting, I think: take 10 catchy hooks and riffs, and instead of making ten good songs they mash them all into one mind-blowing song.

SEO and Lemon Sun

Lemon Sun – Same Old Ground
Found at skreemr.com

So, I started noticing a week or two ago that I was getting some Google traffic from the search query “lemon son band.” In fact, if you type “lemon son band” into Google, kylemonson.com is the first search result (as of this writing, at least). Curious, since a search of kylemonson.com finds not a single use of the word “lemon.”

Anyway, the fourth listing in the search results is Lemon Sun’s MySpace page–turns out they’re a rock band from LA. They’ve got roughly as many MySpace friends and song plays as my own band, Mere, which endeared them to me anyway, but the music is great! “Same Old Ground” sounds like a particularly catchy Strokes song (better sung, maybe), and some of the others are cool too.

In short, I have no idea how or why I ended up in the search results for a typo of this band’s name, but I’m glad I found them. Thanks Google for the algorithmic screwup, and thanks Google Analytics for bringing said screwup to my attention.

Update: Durrrr…as Corinne pointed out today, I’m showing up in their results because “monson band” is in the search query for “lemon son band.” Strange, though, that when I search for “monson band” my site isn’t even on the first page of results. Google, you’ll always be a mystery.

Eff You, Cat!

So, now that it’s had a week to get on its feet, it’s time to announce my latest side project/hobby/timesuck, effyoucat.com. It’s basically a blog full of stories, photos, and videos of cats being dummies. As you probably know, we (meaning Corinne) have two cats, and I (meaning Kyle) hate their feline guts, in an adversarial-but-non-violent way. So I guess this is my outlet, though in all honesty, Corinne does a lot of the posting for it.

Anyway, if you ever have need to vent about your efftarded kitty, send videos, photos, stories, or even just links to effyoucat@gmail.com. I could come up with enough fodder on my own to keep the blog going for years, but where’s the fun in that?

Puts Me to Sleep (in a good way)

Band Of Horses – No One’s Gonna Love You
Found at skreemr.com

This is the song I hum in my head when I can’t sleep. It’s a shame to use such a beautiful song for something as pedestrian as falling asleep, but it usually works. Obviously it’s not doing its job tonight, though.

You’ll Like It, Promise!

In case you didn’t like Okkervil River (they’re one of those love-it-or-hate-it bands), here’s a track by Phoenix that you just can’t not like. Go ahead and try!
