The Winner of American Idol IS….

After an entire season of leading, the right contestant won American Idol: Me. Oh, wait, I just meant the American Idol office pool, not the actual show. Gosh, I’d be much too scared to try out for the show…

David Cook and David Archuletta sang great tonight. The OneRepublic duet was a brilliant idea, but I’m not sure where they dug up ZZ Top AND Brian Adams AND George Michael AND Donna Summer AND Graham Nash AND Gladys Knight (though having Gladys on the show brought the Mormon count to at least three tonight).

Anyway, congrats Davids. You’re great singers and I probably won’t buy either of your albums.

Crisis Averted: Arcade Fire Didn’t Sell Out After All

Just to be clear from the outset, I think the whole idea of “selling out” is totally bogus. A good song is a good song, whether it’s on some indie record no one will ever hear, a Top 40 countdown, or the soundtrack of a Cameron Diaz movie.

That was the recent news about Arcade Fire; they were reportedly providing the soundtrack for a murder mystery based on a Twilight Zone episode, starring Cameron Diaz and James Marsden and made by the guy that did “Donnie Darko.” Details are here, if you’re interested. Suffice it to say, Arcade Fire fans were incensed.

Anyway, Idolator reports that the rumors aren’t true…Win and Regine might do a couple songs for the soundtrack, but it won’t be a full-blown Arcade Fire thing. AF fans everywhere rejoice, but frankly, I’ll take new Arcade Fire music in any form it chooses to come in.

Wii AK-47

Here’s a pretty rad Wii hack, and a good use for that AK-47 you’ve got laying around. Way cooler than that Wii crossbow…

Go Listen to "Little Toy Gun"

Corinne turned me on to this new band HoneyHoney…stop what you’re doing right now, go to their MySpace page, and listen to “Little Toy Gun.” The embedded video above is of them playing an awesome bluegrassy tune, and “Little Toy Gun” is one of the coolest songs I’ve heard in a while. It’s like a Quentin Tarantino movie for your ears…or like Norah Jones on a killing spree.

How new are these guys? Their hit song only has 3,000 listens on MySpace. Yeah, you heard it here first. They’ve only got four songs that I can find online…can’t wait to hear more.

How Much Do You Have to Pay for a Foul Call in LA?

I mean, jeez. 31 personal fouls called against the Jazz, 20 called against the Lakers. Granted, the Jazz are the most-fouling team in the NBA, but they were committing fouls tonight that they weren’t even in the vicinity of! (TV broadcasts won’t typically analyze foul calls with instant replays [the way football does], but TNT accidentally showed one of these…they showed the replay of Odom dunking untouched with Boozer two steps behind him, without realizing that a ghost foul had been called on Boozer). And then there’s Harpring’s non-foul on a hopeless fade-away jumper (whistled), while on the other side of the court Boozer’s trying to reach the rim with two forwards and a center hanging on him (no whistle, not ever). I noticed it especially every time the score was tied: the Jazz would toss it inside to Okur or Boozer for the easy 2, but they could never get a clean shot off or a get a foul call.

And then there was the Jazz’s first-half tactic to plant themselves to close up some lanes and draw some charges. But the charges were never called against the Lakers. Not once. The only charge I can remember was called on Milsap.

This blog (apparently not written by a Jazz fan) has the details on the crap foul calls just from the fourth quarter. There were lots. Anyway, that’s my venting for the evening.

Bored (but Paid) at BS

I have it on good authority that NYMag’s (excellent) Intelligencer blog gets it exactly right in this blog post about working conditions at a certain almost-but-not-quite-purchased-yet Wall Street bank. Nothing sadder than a white-collar worker stuck in limbo, getting paid to do nothing. My source reports that she’s home from work every day in time to take a nap before heading to the gym and eating dinner.

Dressed in Neon

So, this is by far the raddest picture I’ve ever seen–and not at all because it’s of me and my beloved bass. Mary K was snapping pics at last week’s Whiskey Bar show, and had some fun with this one. I think it turned out completely, utterly awesome. Nice work!

BTW, that’s a guitar pick in my mouth, not a cigarette.

BTW2, come see Mere play at Fat Baby on the Lower East Side on Thursday night at 8. It’s a free show…cover’s on us! Fat Baby’s quickly become one of our favorite places to play. Great sound quality and a cool neighborhood. Speaking of which, we’ll be at El Castillo De Jagua (across the street) for dinner beforehand, and the afterparty will be at Marshall Stack on Allen Street. Love to see you at any/all of the festivities.

More Puerto Rico Pics

Corinne and I totally scorched ourselves this morning on the beach…well, her nose and shoulders are a bit sunkist, and I’m about as burned as is humanly possible. So the question is: If I can’t get any MORE burned, I might as well go spend tomorrow on the beach, right?

We had a great time in Old San Juan today, checking out the castles and the really old buildings. I just uploaded a new batch of photos, including one of my gnarly sunburn and some cool ones of Old San Juan–check em out on Flickr.
